Insecurity: Sokoto Senator Ibrahim Lamido dumps All Progressives Congress

David Egbede, April 4, 2026April 4, 2026

Senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Lamido, has announced plans to leave the All Progressives Congress, citing the worsening insecurity in his constituency.

Speaking with journalists in Sokoto, the lawmaker expressed serious concern over persistent banditry attacks across communities in the district, noting that the situation has continued to deteriorate despite repeated calls for intervention.

He said the growing violence has made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the ruling party, stressing that the reality on ground no longer reflects the promises made to the people.

Lamido described the security situation as alarming, revealing that several villages have been attacked by armed groups, forcing residents to flee their homes.

He added that the attacks have disrupted economic activities, especially farming, which remains the main source of livelihood for many in the area.

“My people are enduring untold hardship. Bandits have destroyed entire communities, and I cannot remain in a system that has failed to demonstrate sufficient commitment to resolving this crisis,” Lamido stated.

He further explained that “the decision followed extensive consultations with traditional leaders, political stakeholders, and supporters across the senatorial district,” adding that many residents believe a new political direction is necessary.

The senator also disclosed that he had raised concerns about the worsening insecurity at the federal level on multiple occasions but was disappointed by the lack of adequate response.

According to him, his decision is driven by the need to stand with his constituents, not personal political ambition.

Lamido urged the federal government to step up efforts in tackling banditry across the North-West, warning that continued attacks could deepen the humanitarian crisis in affected communities.

Sokoto East, which includes areas like Sabon Birni, Isa, and Rabah, has recorded frequent banditry incidents in recent months, leading to deaths, kidnappings, and widespread destruction of property.
