The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has said his approach to policing is rooted in a long-term vision he developed early in his career.
Disu made the remarks on Saturday during an interactive session with crime reporters in Lagos, where he reflected on his leadership style and relationship with the media.
According to him, his philosophy of policing was shaped by ideas he conceived as a young officer, long before rising through the ranks.
“My approach to policing has always been guided by a long-term vision. I had a picture of how I would act if I became Commissioner of Police. Even as a cadet, I thought of what I would do if I became IG,” he said.
The police chief also acknowledged the role of the media in his professional journey, admitting that he was initially apprehensive about engaging journalists.
“When I was posted to Lagos, I was apprehensive about the media. I wondered how I would cope, but I decided to engage. We held meetings, and I learnt a lot. I bonded with you,” he said.
Disu noted that during his time in Lagos, he encouraged officers under his command to build constructive relationships with journalists to enhance transparency and public trust.
Recalling his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, he said his engagement style drew criticism, including from within the police.
“When I was commander of RRS, I faced criticism, even from fellow officers. Some said I was doing eye service, but I saw it as an opportunity to express my ideas on what policing should be,” he stated.
He commended crime reporters for their role in covering security issues and supporting the work of the police.
“I am here to say thank you for everything you’re doing,” Disu added.
