FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will participate in the upcoming World Cup and play its scheduled matches in the United States, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Speaking during Iran’s friendly clash with Costa Rica in Turkey, Infantino stated:
“Iran will be at the World Cup.”
He added that the team remains in good condition after interacting with players and officials.
“I’ve seen the team, I’ve spoken to the players and the coach, so everything is fine.”
Infantino emphasized that Iran’s fixtures will go ahead as originally planned, noting:
“Matches will be played where they are supposed to be, according to the draw.”
The tournament, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is set to kick off on June 11. Iran are scheduled to face New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in the group stage, with games fixed for Los Angeles and Seattle.
Uncertainty had surrounded Iran’s participation following the conflict involving the U.S. and Israel, which began in late February.
The Iranian football federation had explored the possibility of relocating matches, while political exchanges further fueled concerns.
However, FIFA has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the competition proceeds as planned, with all qualified teams taking part.
