The federal government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the decision on behalf of the federal government in a statement issued on Tuesday.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, the minister congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion, commending their contributions to national development.
“Nigerian workers have continued to demonstrate hard work and dedication, which remain essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity,” he said.
The minister urged workers to embrace patriotism, productivity, and commitment to duty, noting that such values are critical to achieving sustainable development.
He also reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and creating an enabling environment for economic growth.
“The federal government remains committed to supporting the welfare and security of all workers and creating a favourable environment for economic growth,” he added.
While wishing workers a successful celebration, Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding, urging them to reflect on the importance of unity and hard work in nation-building.
