Michael Carrick has emerged as the frontrunner to become Manchester United’s caretaker head coach following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. United are keen to make an appointment before players return to training on Wednesday.
The move comes after United’s 2–1 defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup, a loss that knocked them out of the competition and increased pressure on the club. Darren Fletcher has been in temporary charge but is expected to step aside.
Carrick previously served as caretaker in 2021, recording two wins and a draw after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal. While Solskjaer has held talks with the club, Carrick’s familiarity with United makes him the leading short term option.
