Borno Attack: Tinubu Govt Targeting Political Rivals, Backing Ethnic Militias — Atiku

David Egbede, March 6, 2026March 6, 2026

Atiku Abubakar has accused the administration of Bola Tinubu of concentrating on political adversaries and allegedly backing ethnic militia groups rather than addressing the country’s growing insecurity.

Atiku’s criticism followed a deadly terrorist attack in Borno State.

In a statement shared on X on Friday, the former vice president condemned the assault by suspected terrorists on a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, located in Gwoza Local Government Area, where more than 100 residents were reportedly abducted.

Atiku Abubakar described the incident as “deeply disturbing,” stating that the Federal Government’s response to the attack and similar acts of violence has fallen short.

He noted that the escalating wave of insecurity across the country has become so widespread that both the government and citizens appear increasingly desensitised to the continued bloodshed.

Atiku further lamented that the Federal Government seemed to be gradually losing control of the battle against terrorism and violent attacks.

The former vice president also alleged that the government was instead preoccupied with targeting political opponents while allowing what he termed self-serving ethnic militia groups to thrive.

“It is unfortunate that the current Federal Government appears to be losing its grip on the fight against terrorism and violent attacks. Instead, it seems more focused on unleashing intense pressure against political opponents and enabling self-serving ethnic militia groups.

“It is disheartening that those responsible for internal security, along with the elite of the ruling party, remain preoccupied with consolidating power, while vulnerable civilians and servicemen are being killed,” Atiku said.
