Arsenal’s Premier League title bid took a serious hit on Wednesday after they threw away a two-goal advantage and conceded a stoppage-time equaliser in a costly 2–2 draw away to bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Arsenal looked set to extend their lead at the summit after Bukayo Saka opened the scoring early and Piero Hincapie doubled the advantage in the second half, putting Mikel Arteta’s side firmly in control at Molineux.
However, the Gunners unravelled late on. Hugo Bueno pulled one back before Riccardo Calafiori inadvertently diverted Tom Edozie’s effort into his own net in the dying moments, following a breakdown in communication between goalkeeper David Raya and defender Gabriel Magalhaes.
It marked the second consecutive league match in which Arsenal failed to protect a lead, following last Thursday’s 1–1 draw at Brentford.
Dropping points against a side rooted to the foot of the table was a major setback for Arsenal, who have now managed just two wins in their last seven league outings. The result has handed renewed belief to second-placed Manchester City, who trail Arsenal by five points with a game in hand and are still due to host the Gunners in April.
Having previously faltered in title races against City, Arteta’s men once again face the risk of past mistakes resurfacing. Their growing anxiety in the closing stages against Wolves suggested a team increasingly weighed down by the pressure of chasing their first league title since 2004.
