The senator representing Adamawa South Senatorial District, Binos Yaroe, has confirmed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as his new political party after recently leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking to journalists in Yola, Yaroe explained that he opted for the ADC instead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in order to strengthen opposition politics and promote a vibrant multi-party democratic system.
He also said his decision was influenced by his long-standing relationship with his political mentor, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. According to him, Atiku played a crucial role in his political journey, offering strong support during his first Senate bid in 2019 and again during his re-election campaign in 2023.
Yaroe noted that both he and Atiku hail from the same constituency in Adamawa State — Atiku from Jada and Yaroe from Mayo Belwa.
At the press briefing organised for him to formally announce his new political platform, the senator stressed that he declined to follow Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri into the APC, choosing instead to align with Atiku in the ADC.
He maintained that his decision was driven by political conviction, loyalty, and a commitment to sustaining a strong democratic opposition in Nigeria.
“I first consulted my supporters across the nine local government areas in my constituency. The PDP has become fractured into several factions, and nobody can confidently say which one is legitimate,” Binos said.
Binos, who wishes to return to the Senate in 2027, said he left the PDP because remaining there posed a serious political risk.
“For anyone who intends to contest elections in 2027, it would be dangerous to remain in such a situation,” he said.
Yaroe recalled that after formally resigning his PDP membership on February 19, he continued consultations with political allies and other opposition lawmakers before arriving at the decision to join the ADC.
According to him, nine senators from different opposition parties, including the Labour Party, APGA and PDP, jointly decided to defect to the ADC as part of efforts to strengthen opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
