The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed calls by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the resignation of its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, while providing clarity on its actions concerning the party’s leadership.
Responding to allegations of bias raised during a press conference by ADC Chairman, David Mark, the Commission said its decisions were strictly guided by constitutional provisions and court rulings.
In a statement by Adedayo Oketola, INEC stressed: “The Chairman does not hold office at the pleasure of any political party or interest group. Any call for removal outside the established constitutional process is not only a distraction but a direct assault on the independence of the nation’s electoral umpire.”
INEC explained that its move to delist ADC leaders from its portal was in compliance with a Court of Appeal judgment and existing legal orders.
“While a political party or a group is allowed to protect their interest, the Commission decided to comply with the Judgment of the Court of Appeal to avert a situation that occurred in Zamfara State and Plateau State where elected officials were removed by the Election Tribunal on account of the disobedience of Court Judgment,” it stated.
The Commission also noted that proceeding with activities involving the David Mark-led faction would have violated court orders, adding: “Proceeding to monitor the congress and convention of the David Mark-led ADC would amount to a disobedience of that order…”
Reaffirming its neutrality, INEC said: “INEC remains a neutral regulator, not a participant in political competition.”
On voter revalidation, the Commission dismissed attempts to politicise the exercise, describing it as routine.
“The proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise is a professional necessity to strengthen the integrity of the National Register of Voters… It is an administrative audit, not a fresh registration,” it added.
INEC maintained that all its actions are rooted in law and aimed at ensuring credible elections, insisting it “will not be distracted by unfounded allegations of collusion or bias.”
