The highly anticipated 2026 Finalissima between Argentina national football team and Spain national football team has been cancelled.
UEFA confirmed the development in a statement released on Sunday, explaining that the match could not go ahead due to the teams’ failure to reach a mutual agreement with the organisers.
The game was originally scheduled to take place in Qatar on March 27, bringing together the champions of UEFA Euro 2024, Spain, and the winners of the Copa América 2024, Argentina.
UEFA explained that several alternatives were proposed in an effort to stage the fixture. One option was to host the match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid with supporters from both sides sharing the stadium equally. However, the proposal was rejected by Argentina.
Another suggestion was to play the Finalissima over two legs—one in Madrid and the other in Buenos Aires during a future international window—but that plan was also declined.
UEFA further proposed finding a neutral venue in Europe where the match could be played either on March 27 or March 30, 2026, but the idea was not accepted.
Argentina later suggested playing the game after the next World Cup, but Spain reportedly had no available dates. Argentina also indicated it could only play on March 31, which organisers said was not feasible.
As a result, UEFA announced that the 2026 edition of the Finalissima has officially been cancelled, expressing disappointment that the two champions will not compete for the prestigious title this year.
