EFCC Chair Olukoyede Denies Political Vendetta in ₦8.7bn Malami Probe

Ogah Adikpe, January 12, 2026January 12, 2026

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has dismissed allegations that the ongoing investigation and prosecution of former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, SAN, is politically motivated.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Olukoyede clarified that professional evidence rather than partisan interests drive the agency’s operations.

Olukoyede stated. “The investigation of this man predated my appointment. I inherited the file, and I did not give the nod to initiate court proceedings until I was satisfied that we had a water-tight investigation.”

He further challenged those alleging he was indicted by the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry to publish the report, asserting that he has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the Presidency and law enforcement agencies.

The clarification comes as Malami, alongside his wife, Hajia Bashir Asabe, and son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, face a 16-count charge of money laundering and criminal concealment of funds.

The EFCC alleges that the defendants handled over ₦8.7 billion in illicit funds, moving them through corporate fronts such as Metropolitan Auto Tech Limited.
