The Federal Government has launched reforms at the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) aimed at boosting local vaccine production, reducing import dependency, and strengthening Nigeria’s livestock sector.

The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to repositioning NVRI for greater efficiency and disease control. “Currently, NVRI meets less than 40 percent of Nigeria’s animal vaccine demand. These reforms will enhance local production, improve institutional capacity, and safeguard our livestock,” he said.

Highlighting the economic impact, Minister Maiha stressed that Nigeria spends roughly $1.5 billion annually on vaccine imports. He directed the institute to cut at least $500 million from this import bill by 2030 through structured partnerships with the private sector.

The reforms are also expected to unlock Nigeria’s $3.2 billion beef export potential by strengthening vaccine production, surveillance, and diagnostics to tackle transboundary animal diseases.

“A robust livestock sector is a key driver of economic growth, and NVRI reforms are central to achieving this goal,” the Minister added.
