Panel Suspends Euracare Medical Director, 2 Others Over Death of Chimamanda’s Son

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended the Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, alongside two other doctors, after establishing a prima facie case of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.

Nkanu, son of  Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege, died on January 7, 2026, following medical care at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital and diagnostic procedures at Euracare in Lagos.

Doctors Suspended Pending Tribunal

Apart from Dr. Majekodunmi, the panel also suspended Euracare’s anesthesiologist, Dr. Titus Ogundare, and the Chief Medical Officer of Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh.

The trio have been barred from medical practice in Nigeria pending the determination of their case by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

In a statement signed by the Secretary of the Investigation Panel, Dr. Enejo Abdu, the panel said:“The panel has established a prima facie case of medical negligence against Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, Dr. Titus Ogundare and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh in the management of the patient.”

The statement further disclosed: “The practitioners are hereby suspended from medical practice in Nigeria pending the determination of their case by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.”

The panel also determined that there is a prima facie case of professional misconduct against 10 additional doctors.

They include: Dr. Adeseye Akinsete, Dr. Chidinma Ohagwu, Dr. Anthony Ajeh, Dr. Amarachi Bayo, Dr. Nkechi Peji, Dr. Olaoye Oludare, Dr. Agaja Oyinkansola, Dr. Patricia Akintan, Dr. Babatunde Bamgboye and Dr. Raji Faidat.

However, eight other doctors investigated in connection with the case were cleared.

The panel reached its decision after reviewing complaints against 21 doctors, examining their counter-affidavits, and considering oral depositions made under oath during its 25th session held at Excel Hotel & Resort on February 17 and 18, 2026.
