Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has launched a military exercise in the Strait of Hormuz, as the United States deploys additional assets to the region amid rising Gulf tensions.
The drill, titled “Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz,” focuses on manoeuvres and strategic control in the narrow waterway linking the Gulf of Oman to the Persian Gulf a route through which a significant share of global oil shipments passes daily.
The exercise comes as Washington increases its military presence in the region, reinforcing its stated commitment to safeguarding international shipping lanes and protecting allied interests. Details of the additional deployments were not immediately disclosed.
Security analysts warn that heightened military activity in the congested waterway raises the risk of miscalculation or maritime incidents, particularly given the strategic importance of the strait to global energy markets.
Although officials on both sides have stressed restraint, the parallel military moves underscore the fragile security environment in the Gulf, where past encounters between Iranian and US forces have triggered diplomatic flare-ups.
Shipping companies operating in the area have been advised to exercise caution as international monitors continue to track developments. With energy markets closely watching events, the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints.
