Organised labour in Sokoto State has endorsed Governor Ahmed Aliyu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement, involving the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), was announced on Friday during the International Workers’ Day celebration in the state.
Speaking at the event, the state NLC chairman, Abdullahi Aliyu Jungle, said the decision was based on the administration’s worker-friendly policies, including the implementation of the N70,000 national minimum wage and the consistent payment of salaries and pensions.
“You have done nothing wrong to us, and you have been tremendously assisting us in many ways. Therefore, nothing warrants us to ask for a change of government in 2027,” Jungle said on behalf of both unions.
He commended the government for improved welfare for workers and described the administration as consistent in meeting its obligations.
The labour unions also presented the governor with an Award of Excellence, describing it as the first of its kind in the state.
“This is the first time in the history of NLC/TUC in the state to bestow such an award on any governor,” Jungle added.
Governor Aliyu, represented by his deputy, Idris Muhammad Gobir, expressed appreciation for the endorsement, pledging to sustain efforts to improve workers’ welfare.
“We are happy with all that you have been doing for us. While in other states they are progressing today, here in Sokoto, we are elated,” he said.
Gobir noted that the administration had taken steps to reposition the civil service since assuming office in 2023.
Also speaking, the state Head of Service, Abdulkadir Ahmed, urged workers to reciprocate the government’s efforts with dedication and professionalism.
The endorsement comes amid increasing political activities across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
