Ashley Young has announced his retirement from professional football, revealing that Ipswich Town’s upcoming fixture could mark the final appearance of a career spanning more than two decades.
The veteran defender, currently with Ipswich Town, made the announcement on Thursday via his verified X account, reflecting on a journey that took him from grassroots football to some of Europe’s most iconic stadiums.
“From Sefton Road to Vicarage Road to Villa Park to Wembley to Old Trafford to San Siro back to Villa Park to Goodison Park and finally to Portman Road. It’s been some journey that I only dreamt of as a boy!” he wrote.
Young, who enjoyed successful spells with top clubs including Manchester United and Inter Milan, suggested that Saturday’s match could bring the curtain down on his playing days.
“But with this dream, there has to be an ending, and Saturday might be the last game of my professional career. 23 years and out!” he added.
“To be continued…”
