Senate Declares Ondo South Seat Vacant, Orders Bye-Election

Soliu Oyesiji, April 28, 2026

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday declared the Ondo South Senatorial District seat vacant following the appointment of its occupant, Jimoh Ibrahim, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Akpabio made the announcement during plenary, stating that the development necessitated the formal declaration of vacancy in line with legislative procedures.

According to him, the decision was informed by Ibrahim’s new diplomatic role, which effectively removes him from active legislative duties in the Senate.

The Senate President subsequently called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a bye-election within 30 days to fill the vacant seat, in accordance with extant laws.

He also directed the Clerk to the National Assembly to formally communicate the resolution of the Senate to the electoral body for immediate action.
