Donald Trump to Meet Top Security Aides as Tensions Over Iran War Escalate

David Egbede, April 27, 2026

Donald Trump is expected to meet with his top national security and foreign policy advisers on Monday, to deliberate on the ongoing conflict with Iran, as diplomatic efforts appear to have stalled.

Reports indicate that recent negotiations aimed at ending the war have hit a dead end, with Tehran accusing United States of being responsible for the breakdown in talks held earlier this month in Pakistan.

A proposed deal from Iran reportedly focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing a US naval blockade-was said to fall short of Washington’s key conditions, further complicating the path to resolution.

Hopes for renewed dialogue briefly rose following diplomatic engagements over the weekend, but those efforts were dampened after planned visits by US envoys were abruptly cancelled.

Speaking after the decision, Trump maintained that the door to talks remains open, stating that Iran could still initiate contact if it is serious about negotiations.
