Soliu Oyesiji, April 26, 2026April 26, 2026

The federal government has commenced the construction of an Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrims Centre at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The project was flagged off on Saturday during a ground-breaking ceremony in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.Akume described the initiative as a landmark project that reflects the connection between faith, national development and human well-being.

He said the facility would serve as “a sanctuary of hope, peace and spiritual renewal for travellers, pilgrims and the Christian faithful.”

According to him, the chapel and pilgrims centre is designed to provide a quiet space for reflection and spiritual support, particularly for passengers navigating the pressures of travel.

Akume noted that the project is coming at a time when increased mobility and modern-day challenges have heightened the need for spiritual support systems.

“The centre will be a consecrated haven open to all, designed to uplift hearts, ease burdens and strengthen faith,” he said.

He added that the initiative also aligns with the government’s efforts to improve passenger experience and upgrade infrastructure within the aviation sector.

“Modern airports must cater not only to physical transit but also to the emotional and spiritual needs of travellers,” he stated.

The SGF commended stakeholders and partners involved in the project for their commitment, expressing optimism that the facility would serve generations of users upon completion.

The project is expected to complement existing airport infrastructure while promoting values of unity, compassion and shared humanity.
