Court Admits Key Exhibits in ₦8.7bn Money Laundering Trial Involving Malami, Family

David Egbede, April 21, 2026

A Federal High Court in Abuja has admitted nine documents presented by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the ongoing trial of Abubakar Malami.

Malami is being prosecuted alongside his wife, Asabe Bashir, and son, Abdulaziz, over an alleged ₦8.7 billion money laundering scheme.

The EFCC has filed an amended 16-count charge bordering on conspiracy and laundering of funds said to be proceeds of unlawful activities under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The documents were admitted on Monday after being tendered by a Zenith Bank compliance officer, Mashelia Bata, who appeared as the fourth prosecution witness.

He told the court that the bank provided records linked to accounts associated with the defendants and several companies following EFCC requests.

According to the witness, the documents—covering transactions between July 2024 and March 2026—are part of the bank’s official records and include details tied to firms such as Rayhaan Hotels Limited and Rayhaan Bustan Agro Allied Limited, among others.

During his testimony, Bata outlined multiple financial transactions connected to accounts belonging to Malami and his law firm.

He highlighted significant inflows, including hundreds of millions of naira from various entities between 2020 and 2022, as well as detailed credit and debit activity spanning several years.

Despite objections from defence counsel, the court admitted the documents as evidence. The defence subsequently requested time to review the materials ahead of cross-examination.

Presiding judge Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the case until May 13, 2026, for continuation of trial.
