INEC Clears Chairman Joash Amupitan of fake X Account, Calls Viral Posts ‘Coordinated Disinformation’

David Egbede, April 20, 2026April 20, 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports linking its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, to a purported verified X account accused of making partisan statements.

In a public statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, on Monday, the commission said comprehensive forensic investigations confirmed that the INEC Chairman does not operate any personal X account.

The statement reads, “Prof. Amupitan does NOT operate any personal X (Twitter) account.”

INEC described the viral screenshots circulating online as fabricated and part of a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at misleading the public.

“All the alleged posts, replies, or statements attributed to him on X are fraudulent… and part of a coordinated disinformation.”

“There is no linkage between the disputed account and the Chairman’s email, phone number, or identity records.”

“The public and media organisations are advised to verify social media content through official channels before publication” he said.

According to the commission, a detailed digital forensic review found no connection between the alleged account and Prof. Amupitan’s verified email, phone number, or identity records.

It also revealed that timestamp analysis and archived platform checks showed no trace of the disputed posts ever existing on X.

The commission further disclosed that the matter has been referred to security agencies for deeper investigation, while urging the public and media organisations to verify social media content through official channels before sharing.
