Alaafin of Oyo Raises Alarm over Fresh Killings in Southwest, Kwara, and Kogi, Calls for Urgent Action

David Egbede, April 18, 2026April 18, 2026

The Palace of the Alaafin of Oyo has raised serious concerns over the worsening security situation across parts of Ondo State, Kwara State, Kogi State, and Ekiti State, following renewed attacks on communities.

In a press release on Friday, the Palace described the situation as “grave,” citing recent violent incidents, including a deadly attack in Igushin community in Akure North, Ondo State, where a mother and her daughter were reportedly killed during a night invasion by armed assailants.

According to the statement, the attackers, suspected to be kidnappers, stormed the community with the intention to abduct residents but resorted to sporadic gunfire, leading to tragic fatalities.

The Palace noted that the incident reflects a disturbing trend of recurring attacks, kidnappings, and killings across the affected regions, despite repeated calls for government intervention.

“The frequency and nature of these incidents pose a serious threat to lives, livelihoods, and the overall stability of affected communities.”

While acknowledging ongoing efforts by security agencies, the Alaafin stressed the need for more decisive and coordinated action.

“The current situation demands swift reinforcement, intensified coordination, and immediate scaling up of security responses, particularly in vulnerable rural and agrarian areas.”

The Palace called for rapid deployment of security personnel, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger collaboration between authorities and local communities to curb further violence.

It also urged traditional institutions to take a more proactive role in community mobilization and conflict prevention, leveraging their closeness to the grassroots.

In a strategic move, the Alaafin directed the Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, to commence wide consultations with traditional rulers and stakeholders to develop community-driven security solutions.

“These actions are not only necessary but time-sensitive and must be pursued within the framework of the Constitution… ensuring full alignment with lawful security operations.”

Citizens were also advised to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and cooperative with security agencies, as collective vigilance is key to early threat detection and community resilience.

Reaffirming commitment to peace and stability, the Palace emphasized that the protection of lives and property must not be compromised.

“The right of every citizen to live in peace and security is non-negotiable.”
