2027 Election Timetable: Reps To Hold Emergency Sitting On Tuesday

Rejoice Ewodage, February 14, 2026February 14, 2026

The House of Representatives is set to reconvene for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to review matters arising from the recent announcement of the 2027 General Election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

An internal memorandum from the Office of the Speaker, issued late Friday, urged lawmakers to prioritise attendance, highlighting the constitutional and national significance of the development.

The notice described the emergency sitting as a reflection of the House’s resolve to respond promptly to issues with far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s democratic process.

Deliberations are expected to focus on legislative matters connected to the election timetable, in line with the National Assembly’s constitutional responsibilities.

According to House spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi, all business relating to the matter will be addressed expeditiously, underscoring the urgency and importance of the session.

The emergency sitting follows INEC’s announcement last Friday of key dates for the 2027 general elections. The commission had fixed February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and March 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls. Party primaries are scheduled between May 22 and June 20, 2026, while other dates cover voter registration and campaigns.

The timetable has generated stakeholder reactions, particularly concerns over the February 20 date, which falls within the Ramadan period (February 7 – March 8, 2027). Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar called on INEC to reconsider, stressing that holding elections during a major religious observance could affect participation and reflect poor planning.

In its earlier response, INEC maintained that the dates were set in line with the Constitution, the Electoral Act, 2022, and its own regulations, while acknowledging stakeholder concerns and undertaking consultations that could lead to adjustments where necessary.

The House’s emergency sitting is expected to provide legislative input into any potential adjustments, reinforcing the National Assembly’s role in ensuring that electoral processes remain inclusive, legal, and in the best interest of Nigerians.
