US Approves ₦587bn War Chest for Nigeria, Others as Washington Steps Up Fight Against Terror in West Africa

Happiness Udisifan, January 16, 2026January 16, 2026

In a major boost to regional security efforts, the United States has approved a massive ₦587 billion ($413.046 million) allocation for counter-insurgency operations in Nigeria and other African countries for the 2026 fiscal year. The funding, captured in the US National Defence Authorisation Act, signals Washington’s growing concern over the worsening security situation across West Africa, where insurgency, banditry and extremist violence continue to threaten civilian lives and economic stability.

The allocation, approved under Title XLIII for Operation and Maintenance, is earmarked for activities under the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), which oversees American military engagement on the continent. The move reflects a strategic push to strengthen intelligence sharing, logistics, training and operational support for partner nations battling armed groups, with Nigeria remaining a central focus due to its frontline role in regional security.

The fresh funding comes on the heels of recent high profile security actions, including Christmas Day strikes on terrorist hideouts in Sokoto State carried out under the Donald Trump administration. These operations underscored a renewed tempo in joint counter-terrorism efforts, aimed at degrading extremist networks and cutting off their operational capabilities across border communities.

Further reinforcing this commitment, AFRICOM on Tuesday delivered a new batch of military equipment to Nigerian security agencies, part of ongoing efforts to enhance battlefield readiness and operational effectiveness. Analysts say the latest financial and material support could reshape the tempo of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign, offering fresh momentum in the long running fight to restore peace and stability in vulnerable regions.
