President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
The resignation followed the submission of a letter by Egbetokun, who cited pressing family considerations.
In a statement issued on February 24, the Presidency said Tinubu acknowledged Egbetokun’s service to the Nigeria Police Force and his role in strengthening internal security during his tenure.
Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police in June 2023 for a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
Announcing the new appointment, the President approved the elevation of Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu to serve in acting capacity amid what the Presidency described as ongoing security challenges across the country.
According to the statement, Disu’s appointment takes immediate effect.
In compliance with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General, after which his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The Presidency reiterated its commitment to strengthening national security and ensuring a professional and accountable police force.
