Tinubu Sends Federal Delegation to Kano Following Singer Market Fire
President Bola Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead a high-powered Federal Government delegation to Kano in the wake of the devastating fire at the Singer Market over the weekend.
The delegation, set to depart Abuja on Monday, will convey the President’s sympathies to traders who lost billions of naira in the blaze, according to a statement issued on Sunday by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
The fire, which reportedly started on Saturday evening and raged into Sunday morning, caused extensive damage to the market. Tinubu expressed regret that this is the second fire at the same market in less than two weeks.
The federal team will also pledge financial assistance to support victims and assist the Kano State government in facilitating the quick reopening of the market.
Key members of the delegation include Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senator Kawu Ismaila, and Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, chairman of the House Appropriation Committee. Also on the team are Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Dr Bernard Doro and NEMA Director-General Zubaida Umar.
Earlier, President Tinubu had spoken by phone with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to obtain a situation report on the fire and its impact.
In addition, the President has directed a comprehensive investigation into the causes of recurrent market fires, emphasizing the need to prevent such tragedies in the future.
