Nigeria’s National Grid Collapses For The Second Time In Four Days

David Egbede, January 27, 2026January 27, 2026

Nigeria experienced another nationwide power outage on Tuesday after the national grid suffered a system collapse, the second major disruption recorded in the space of four days this year.

Real-time data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator’s (NISO) grid performance dashboard showed that electricity generation fell to 39 megawatts (MW) by 11:00 a.m., with only one generating company still operational at the time of the incident. Several other power plants recorded zero output during the disruption.

Load allocation figures further showed that power supply to electricity distribution companies across the country dropped to 0.00MW, confirming that no power was being supplied nationwide.

Electricity distributor Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EkoDisCo) also confirmed the collapse in a statement to customers on Tuesday, saying the incident occurred at about 10:48 a.m. and led to a loss of supply across its network.

“Kindly be informed that there was a system collapse at 10:48hrs, which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network,” the company said.

EkoDisCo added that it was working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to restore supply, assuring customers that updates would be provided as the situation improves.

This latest incident marks the second national grid collapse in January 2026 and the third in less than a month. The grid previously failed on December 29, 2025, and again on Friday, January 23, 2026.
