Rejoice Ewodage, March 1, 2026March 1, 2026

The Federal Government has expressed deep concern over escalating tensions in the Gulf region, warning of potentially grave consequences for regional and global stability if the situation deteriorates further.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could intensify hostilities.

The government urged strict adherence to the United Nations Charter and the Geneva Conventions, emphasizing respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Nigeria also stressed the need for caution in the use of force, particularly lethal force, to prevent further civilian casualties and safeguard established principles of international law.

According to the statement, preserving the existing legal framework that regulates and limits the use of force remains essential to protecting civilian populations and maintaining international order.

As a longstanding advocate of non-alignment, multilateralism, and constructive engagement, Nigeria reiterated its support for renewed diplomatic efforts through established international and regional mechanisms.

The government welcomed initiatives aimed at confidence-building, mediation, and dialogue, encouraging all stakeholders to pursue peaceful resolution in the interest of collective security and shared prosperity.

It further affirmed its solidarity with the international community, maintaining that lasting peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, mutual respect, and faithful adherence to international law.
