Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Fintiri announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accompanied by members of his cabinet and key state officials. He described the move as being in the “developmental interest of Adamawa residents.”
The defection follows a similar move by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf in late January 2026, who cited closer collaboration with the federal government under President Bola Tinubu as his reason for rejoining the APC.

With Fintiri’s defection, the APC now governs 30 out of Nigeria’s 36 states, leaving the PDP with control of only Oyo, Bauchi, and Zamfara. Other states remain under smaller parties: Anambra is governed by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Abia by the Labour Party, and Osun by the Accord Party.
Below is the list of states currently governed by APC:

Akwa Ibom
Bayelsa
Benue
Borno
Cross River

Fintiri’s move significantly strengthens the APC’s dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections, consolidating the party’s influence across the country.
