Five people were killed in a night attack on a residential area in Miango district, Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Thursday, February 26.
The victims—Nancy Monday, Nuhu Isaiah, Henry Dah, Zongo Sunday, and Tarma Monday, were members of a single family and were attacked near ECWA Church, Tudun Wada, at about 9:30 pm, according to the Irigwe Development Association (IDA).
The attack comes just four days after the murder of Mr. Abbas Musa, an Irigwe native shot dead at his home on Monday, February 23. The IDA expressed concern over repeated attacks on Irigwe communities and lamented that perpetrators of previous incidents have not been apprehended.
“The leadership of the Irigwe Development Association received the news of Mr. Abbas Musa’s murder at gunpoint at the nucleus of his house when the family was about to retire for the night,” the IDA said in a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Sam Jugo. The association appealed to residents to remain law-abiding despite the attacks.
The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, confirmed the Thursday night attack, describing it as tragic. He assured that security operatives are on the trail of the attackers.
“Our men responded swiftly to the distress call and will not relent until the perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice,” Ewah said. He urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
The recent killings have heightened tensions in Bassa LGA, with locals calling for intensified security measures to prevent further attacks and restore confidence in the area.
