FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reaffirmed his “full confidence” in Mexico’s ability to serve as a co-host for the 2026 World Cup following discussions with President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Infantino’s remarks came after a phone conversation with the Mexican leader, amid concerns over security in the country.
The assurance follows violent unrest linked to a security operation that reportedly killed Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which sparked clashes between cartel members and Mexican forces. The incident had led some fans to call on FIFA to reconsider Mexico’s role in the tournament.
In an official statement, Infantino emphasized that preparations for the World Cup are proceeding as planned, despite the security challenges in certain regions of the country.
