David Egbede, January 30, 2026January 30, 2026

The Federal Government has deployed electric vehicles at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, in a move aimed at modernizing airport operations and improving service efficiency.

At a ceremony on Thursday, the Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Abdullahi Ganduje, announced the deployment of 10 electric shuttle buses and 20 electric saloon vehicles to support airport logistics, staff movement, and passenger services.

Ganduje described the initiative as a milestone in FAAN’s efforts to enhance operational performance and align Nigeria’s aviation sector with international standards.

He said the electric vehicles are cleaner, quieter, and more energy-efficient, adding that their adoption would reduce carbon emissions and improve the airport environment for passengers and staff. “This initiative directly supports global sustainability targets, including the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,”

Ganduje said. “By embracing electric mobility, FAAN is positioning Nigerian airports to remain competitive, responsible, and future-ready.”

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting reforms in the aviation sector, saying the deployment reflects a clear policy direction prioritising efficiency, sustainability, and institutional renewal. Ganduje added that NAIA is the first phase of the programme, which will eventually expand to other airports nationwide.
