FG Alerts Nigerians in Iran, Gulf Nations on Safety Risks

David Egbede, February 28, 2026February 28, 2026

The Federal Government has urged Nigerians residing in the Middle East—especially in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries—to heighten their security awareness amid escalating military tensions in the region.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities said they are closely monitoring reports of military strikes allegedly carried out by Israel and the United States on targets in Iran, as well as retaliatory developments affecting parts of the Gulf.

Citizens in the affected areas were advised to stay vigilant and steer clear of strategic or sensitive sites, including military facilities and government buildings, which could become targets in the ongoing hostilities.

The government also recommended reducing non-essential travel and avoiding large gatherings or protests until the security situation stabilises.

Nigerians were further encouraged to follow directives from local security agencies, stressing that cooperation with authorities is crucial for personal safety.

Diplomatic missions, including the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and consular offices across Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, have been placed on alert to support citizens and ensure effective communication where required.

Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad, the government said it will continue to track developments and provide updates as necessary.

It also called on all parties involved to de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue in the interest of global peace and stability.

The advisory follows reports of airstrikes on sites in Iranian cities, with explosions and smoke seen in the capital.
