Rejoice Ewodage, February 18, 2026February 21, 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will conduct the FCT Area Council Election on Saturday, 21st February 2026. This election will elect Chairmen for the six Area Councils and Councillors for the 62 Wards in the FCT.

Why it matters: Area Councils are directly responsible for day-to-day services that affect residents, so your vote impacts local governance.

Voting begins at 8:30 am and ends by 2:30 pm across all Polling Units (PUs) in the FCT. To make sure you’re ready, here’s what you need to know:

1. Identify Your Polling Unit (PU)

If you didn’t vote in 2023 or are newly registered, it’s important to know where you vote. INEC provides two ways to check:

  • Online: Visit cvr.inecnigeria.org/vvs
  • Physically: Check lists posted at all PUs starting Tuesday, 17th February 2026

2. Locate Your PU Physically

If you know your PU but not its exact location, INEC recommends:

  • cvr.inecnigeria.org/pu

Plan ahead so you’re not delayed on election day.

3. Voting Hours

  • Start: 8:30 am
  • Close: 2:30 pm

Be punctual to ensure your vote is counted.

4. Exercise Your Right Peacefully

INEC urges all eligible voters in the FCT to turn out en masse and vote peacefully. Every vote counts in shaping the local government.

5. INEC’s Commitment

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the FCT, has assured residents that the Commission is committed to making every vote count and consolidating democracy. According to the REC, participating in the election is a key way for residents to strengthen governance at the grassroots level.

“Preparation is key,” the REC said, urging voters to know their Polling Units, arrive on time, and vote responsibly to make a real difference in their communities.
