Eight more members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Adamawa State House of Assembly have officially defected from the party.
Among those leaving was Speaker Bathiya Wesley, who resigned his PDP membership during the Assembly sitting on Wednesday. This marked the third consecutive day of defections, following one lawmaker’s departure on Monday, February 23, and six more on Tuesday, February 24.
Other PDP members who defected alongside the Speaker include Moses Yerima Zah of Michika Constituency and Kate Raymond Mamuno of Demsa LGA, who also serves as the House Majority Leader.
The others are Pwamwakeno Mackondo, representing Numan; Adun John Alaba, representing Uba Gaya Constituency; Bulus Kantom of Shelleng Constituency; Musa Mahmud Kallamu (Mayo Belwa); and Japhet Hammanjabu (Verre).
They announced their decision during Wednesday’s plenary session, citing the crisis in the PDP at the national level as their reason, as those before them had done.
The latest resignations from the PDP had been anticipated, as even voices within the party’s leadership at the state level had hinted at the likelihood that virtually all prominent figures in the PDP would be leaving.
This development comes amid growing certainty that the state governor himself, Rt Hon Ahmadu Fintiri, is on his way out and is widely believed to be heading to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
