Adamawa State Governor Umaru Fintiri has just announced his defection from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
The announcement was made moments ago during a state broadcast, marking a major political realignment in Adamawa and sending shockwaves through the opposition ranks.
In the broadcast, Governor Fintiri said his decision was taken in the interest of the people of Adamawa State and in the spirit of national unity, stressing the need for stronger alignment with the federal government to advance the state’s development priorities.
He further stated that his defection comes with the full weight of his administration — including all cabinet members, political appointees, and elected local government chairmen — signaling a sweeping and coordinated political shift.
Shortly after declaring his defection, the governor formally registered as a member of the APC, effectively sealing his move to the ruling party.
The development comes days after several state lawmakers exited the PDP, deepening internal fractures within the party in Adamawa.
It also follows a broader national trend that has seen several opposition governors cross over to the APC, swelling the ruling party’s control to about 29 of Nigeria’s 36 states — a major consolidation of political power ahead of the next electoral cycle.
