The Abia chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government, warning that it may embark on an indefinite strike if its welfare demands are not addressed.
The notice, issued on Monday, was signed by the state NUT Chairman, Mr. Friday Madu, and Secretary, Mrs. Nnenna Okonkwo, and expired at midnight on January 12. The union stated that the government’s inaction on issues raised in a previous communiqué dated December 19, 2025, is threatening the industrial harmony currently enjoyed in the state.
The NUT’s demands include addressing alleged irregularities in the 65/40 years service elongation policy, such as illegal disengagements, removal from payroll, and demotion of head teachers. Other key issues are the payment of outstanding salary arrears for primary and junior secondary school teachers, reinstatement of the 27.5% Teachers’ Special Salary Structure for primary school teachers, salary harmonisation for teachers on the same grade level, and implementation of minimum wage adjustments for secondary school teachers.
The union also called for the release of approved running costs for head teachers, payment of pending leave allowances, correction of misdirected NUT dues, and cancellation of the proposed Computer-Based Test format for promotion interviews. NUT warned that failure to meet these demands would compel members to commence an indefinite strike.
