The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Amupitan, over allegations linking him to a pro-Bola Ahmed Tinubu social media post from 2023.
In a strongly worded statement, the party described the revelation as “a grave affront to the integrity of our electoral system,” insisting that the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy is at stake.
“In a democracy, the umpire must be above suspicion. He must not only be independent, he must be seen, beyond any reasonable doubt, to be independent,” the statement read.
ADC further alleged that there were attempts to manipulate digital records connected to the controversy, warning that such actions undermine public trust.
“However, more troubling is the desperate attempt to tamper with digital records, to erase evidence of his previous partisanship. This is not a trivial matter. It is a calculated assault on truth and accountability,” the party stated.
The party argued that the INEC Chairman’s alleged actions fall short of the standards required to oversee elections, stressing that neutrality is non-negotiable.
“A man who manipulates records to save himself cannot be trusted to safeguard the mandate of millions,” ADC said.
Reiterating its position, the party declared that Professor Amupitan must step down immediately.
“This is why Professor Amupitan must resign. Now. Anything less is an insult to the Nigerian people and a dangerous precedent for our democracy,” the statement added.
ADC also disclosed plans to escalate the matter by updating its petitions to relevant institutions, including the Nigerian Bar Association, as well as foreign governments.
The party warned that it would intensify its civil disobedience actions until the INEC Chairman vacates office.
