ADC Crisis Deepens as Nafiu Bala Denies Stepping Down, Alleges Forgery

David Egbede, April 3, 2026April 3, 2026

The leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken another turn as factional chairman Nafiu Bala firmly rejected claims that he resigned, insisting the circulating letter is fake.

In a video response following INEC’s recent decision on the party’s dispute, Bala dismissed the document allegedly dated May 17, 2025, stating:
“I wish to state that this paper did not come from me, and that is not my signature on it. The signature you see there was forged.”

He explained that his current position stems from the resignation of the party’s former leadership, including ex-chairman Ralph Nwosu, on July 2. According to him, he was mandated to oversee party affairs pending a national convention.

“On that day, the former ADC chairman, Ralph Nwosu, announced that he, his secretary, and other party leaders were stepping down from their positions… he told the world that I… would continue running the party affairs until the national convention,” Bala said.

Reaffirming his authority, he added:
“Because of that, I am resuming office today as the ADC national chairman. According to our party constitution, when there is no leader, the deputy takes over.”

Bala also warned against attributing unofficial documents to him:
“When I was deputy national chairman, if I were to write a resignation letter, I would do it using my official letterhead. Any letter not containing my letterhead is not from me.”

The dispute continues to intensify amid ongoing legal battles and conflicting claims over the party’s leadership.
