Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, professionally known as Tems, has shared her perspective on marriage, stating that it should be pursued as a path for growth rather than based solely on emotions.
In a recent interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the multiple Grammy Award winner noted that marriage can face challenges and stressed that couples should enter it with the understanding that it won’t always be smooth.
Tems added that because of marriage’s unpredictable nature, she prefers a God-fearing partner, believing that such a person is more likely to be responsible and accountable.
“My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to? If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?
“If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want. But marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility. It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person, like it evolves you. Because marriage is a whole another level, it’s supposed to bring out the hard times,” she stated.
