The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 39 people were involved in a multiple-vehicle crash on the Kugbo Furniture Market axis of the AYA–Nyanya route in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Acting Corps Public Education Officer, (ACPEO) Mrs. Felicia Kalu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, in Abuja.

Kalu said that the crash occurred at about 4:48pm on Monday and involved six vehicles, including two tippers, a commercial bus and private cars.

According to her, the FRSC rescue team from Zebra 12 Unit arrived at the scene within four minutes of receiving the distress call and immediately commenced life-saving operations.

“In a coordinated rescue effort, officers successfully extricated a trapped victim from one of the heavily damaged tippers and administered first aid before evacuating him to the National Hospital for further medical attention,” she said.

Kalu added that out of the 39 persons involved, two male victims sustained injuries ranging from bruises to fractures, with one receiving immediate first aid at the scene.

She also added that FRSC personnel worked tirelessly to stabilise the situation, prevent further casualties and ensure the safety of other road users.

Kalu said the Unit Commander led officers and marshals on ground to coordinate rescue and traffic management operations.

She said that the heavy-duty recovery equipment was deployed to remove the crashed vehicles obstructing the highway.

“Coordinated traffic control measures prevented a potential gridlock and restored normal traffic flow along the busy corridor.

“Following the rescue and evacuation of victims, the vehicles involved in the crash were handed over to the Karu Police Division for further investigation,”she said.

She further stated that, the Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, under whose directive the rescue and clearance operations were carried out, reiterated FRSC’s commitment to protecting lives.

This, she said was through rapid emergency response, professional rescue operations and effective traffic management.

Kalu quoted the corps marshal as urging motorists, particularly drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to observe safe speed limits, maintain proper lane discipline and remain vigilant to prevent avoidable crashes.
