The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed deep concern over a worrying rise in “one chance” criminal attacks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following the shocking deaths of a nurse and a lawyer in separate incidents across Abuja.

The victims, Ms. Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem, a dedicated healthcare worker, and Princess Chigbo Mediatrix, a former Treasurer of the NBA Abuja Branch, were reportedly lured and attacked by criminals posing as commercial transport operators. Their bodies were later discovered in different parts of the city, leaving family, colleagues, and the wider community in shock and mourning.

Confirming the death of Mediatrix, the FCT Police Command, through its spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, said on Wednesday that “discreet investigations” were ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police have appealed to members of the public with any information to come forward to assist with the investigation.

The NBA has called on authorities, including Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, to intervene and take urgent steps to curb the wave of violent attacks. In a statement, the association described the killings as “tragic and deeply alarming,” emphasizing that such acts threaten not only the safety of professionals but the sense of security in the city as a whole.

“These brutal killings are a wake-up call,” the NBA said, to ensure that residents and professionals can go about their lives without fear. Security agencies and government must act decisively to prevent further loss of innocent lives.

The incidents have sparked conversations across Abuja about the risks associated with public transport and the need for stronger security measures. Residents have expressed fear and frustration, urging authorities to provide swift and visible action against criminal networks exploiting vulnerable commuters.

As investigations continue, the families and colleagues of the victims are calling for justice, while the NBA and other stakeholders push for awareness and reforms to prevent further tragedies.
