Kano Market Fire: Tinubu Sympathises With Traders, Orders Probe

Rejoice Ewodage, February 15, 2026February 16, 2026

President Bola Tinubu has sympathised with traders and residents of Kano State following a fire outbreak at Singer Market, ordering a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

The fire, which broke out on Saturday evening, raged into Sunday morning and caused extensive damage to the popular food market. Although the full extent of the losses has yet to be officially disclosed, traders were left counting significant losses as goods and property were destroyed.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the incident as tragic and expressed concern over its recurrence.

Tinubu had earlier contacted the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to obtain a situation report on the fire and assess the immediate impact on traders and the surrounding community.

The President was particularly alarmed that the latest blaze occurred less than two weeks after another fire incident destroyed dozens of shops and property at the same market, raising fresh concerns about safety standards and fire prevention measures.

According to the statement, Tinubu has directed a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the repeated market fires, noting that such incidents often leave traders in despair and disrupt economic activities.

The directive signals the federal government’s concern over recurring market fires in parts of the country, which frequently result in heavy financial losses for small-scale traders and business owners.
