12 Years After Chibok Abduction: 83 Girls Still Missing as Activists Demand Action, Accountability

The Bring Back Our Girls Movement has renewed calls for urgent government action as Nigeria marks the 12th anniversary of the abduction of schoolgirls from Government Secondary School Chibok on April 14, 2014.

In a press statement released through Enough is Enough Nigeria, the group said that despite years of advocacy and rescue efforts, 83 of the abducted girls remain unaccounted for.

The movement described the anniversary as a painful reminder of the enduring trauma faced by the girls, their families, and the Chibok community.

According to the statement, the tragedy has also become symbolic of a wider security crisis, with repeated cases of school abductions recorded across Nigeria since the incident.

“Twelve years later, the pain is still fresh. Families continue to wait, hope, and grieve. We must not allow their voices to fade,” the group stated, stressing that the continued captivity of dozens of the girls reflects gaps in national security and response systems.

The group issued a set of demands to the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Borno State Government, including calls for greater transparency on rescue operations, accountability for previous investigations, and long-term support for the released girls and affected families.

It emphasized that the welfare, rehabilitation, and reintegration of survivors must remain a priority.

“We demand clear updates on efforts to secure the release of the remaining girls, as well as accountability for past failures. The government must also sustain support systems for those who have returned and the families still waiting,” the statement added.

The advocacy group urged Nigerians and the international community not to forget the Chibok girls, noting that sustained public pressure remains critical in ensuring justice and closure for the victims and their families.
