The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting incident that occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State, which led to the death of Mr Mene Ogidi.
The decision followed the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who immediately directed that all officers linked to the incident be withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja.
A statement on Wednesday by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said the affected officers were subjected to expedited investigation and disciplinary review by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and other internal mechanisms.
The committee found that the principal officer involved, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, acted in clear violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms.
It described his conduct as unlawful, unprofessional and a breach of his oath of office.
“The findings established unequivocally that the principal officer acted in gross violation of extant rules governing the use of firearms,” the statement said.
Following the findings, the FDC recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable.
The Inspector-General of Police approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification, in line with due process.
The statement added that once administrative procedures are concluded, the affected officers will be handed over to relevant judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in what it described as an extrajudicial shooting.
Reiterating the Force’s position, the Inspector-General stressed a zero-tolerance policy on abuse of power and unlawful use of firearms by officers.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law,” the statement quoted him as saying, adding that any officer who violates this principle would face both disciplinary and legal consequences.
The police leadership also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, Mr Ogidi, describing the incident as tragic and assuring that justice would be served.
“The Force is fully committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served, in a manner that reinforces public confidence and institutional accountability,” the statement added.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights.
