The International Air Transport Association (International Air Transport Association) has recognised Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, as one of Africa’s top four most prominent aviation leaders.
The announcement was made at the ongoing IATA Focus Africa Conference in Addis Ababa by the association’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Alawadhi.
Alawadhi said the recognition was based on Keyamo’s “cutting-edge policy direction, strategic reforms, and unwavering commitment to global aviation standards.”
He highlighted Nigeria’s implementation of the Cape Town Convention and IDERA framework, alongside its 91.4 per cent score in ICAO safety oversight, describing them as indicators of strong regulatory progress.
“This recognition reflects purposeful leadership, bold reforms, and measurable progress. Nigeria’s aviation sector is clearly on a transformative path,” Alawadhi said.
He added that improved engagement with global aviation stakeholders and swift resolution of longstanding industry challenges had strengthened investor confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Also recognised alongside Keyamo were Teresia Mbaika Malokwe, Principal Secretary, State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Kenya; Poppy Khosa, Director of Civil Aviation and Chief Executive Officer of the South African Civil Aviation Authority; and Mesfin Tasew, Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines.
The honour, according to IATA, reflects its commitment to celebrating excellence and innovation across Africa’s aviation industry.
Keyamo’s inclusion is seen as further validation of Nigeria’s growing influence in regional aviation reforms and safety compliance.
The Focus Africa Conference, themed “Elevating Aviation Safety, Connectivity and Operational Efficiency in Africa,” continues in Addis Ababa, bringing together regulators, airlines, and industry stakeholders to chart the future of African aviation.
