The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) has endorsed Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat, in a post on X, indicating growing alignment within the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the polls.
“FLASH: The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) today unanimously endorsed and adopted the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, to be consensus candidate for the 2027 elections in Lagos State,” Gawat stated.
According to him, the endorsement was announced by GAC leader, Tajudeen Olusi, during a meeting held at Lagos House, Marina.
He added that members of the council also demonstrated support by purchasing the nomination form for the deputy governor.
“The GAC members also announced that they paid for his nomination form,” the post noted.
The endorsement comes a day after Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, publicly declared Hamzat as his preferred successor.
Sanwo-Olu made the announcement following a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally informed party leaders and members of the State Executive Council of his intention to contest the governorship seat.
“We just received Mr Deputy, who had come with a very powerful delegation of our leaders in the state to inform us of his intention to contest for the seat of the governorship position of the state,” the governor said.
“It was unanimous with all of us to say that Mr Deputy Governor is a man who is fit and well-prepared for this job. He is a man who knows where all the rooms in the house are,” he added.
The governor also praised Hamzat’s “integrity, loyalty, commitment and support,” describing him as well-positioned to lead the state.
The latest endorsement by the GAC further strengthens Hamzat’s standing within the APC as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
