The Federal Government on Tuesday unveiled a new digital website for the Federal Character Commission, in a move aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who performed the unveiling in Abuja, described the initiative as a major milestone in the commission’s evolution and Nigeria’s pursuit of equity in public service.
Akume said the commission, as a constitutional body, plays a critical role in ensuring fair representation of all regions and groups in government institutions.
“In a country as diverse as Nigeria, the Federal Character Commission represents a cornerstone for trust in governance because it reassures every citizen that the Nigerian state belongs to all and serves all,” he said.
He added that the principle of federal character goes beyond legal requirements, describing it as essential to national unity, stability and nation-building.
According to him, the new platform should function as more than a digital presence, urging the commission to deploy it as a tool for service delivery and accountability.
“The work of the commission must continue to evolve to reflect the demands of our time, driven by technology, data and citizens’ expectations for openness and transparency,” Akume stated.
He said the website should provide real-time access to data, guidelines, certifications, and public inquiries, while also enabling the publication of compliance records and institutional reports in a transparent and verifiable manner.
Also speaking, Oluremi Tinubu, represented by Mrs Laila Jibrin, described the launch as a significant step toward strengthening institutional capacity and national cohesion.
She commended the Executive Chairman of the commission, Mrs Hulayat Omidiran, for embracing innovation and aligning with the administration’s digital transformation agenda.
“The true value of this website lies not merely in its existence but in its effective utilisation. It must remain active, regularly updated and user-friendly,” she said.
In her remarks, Omidiran said the platform represents a decisive move to modernise the commission’s communication and service delivery systems.
“It provides a unified, accessible, and user-friendly platform through which the public can engage with the commission more effectively,” she said.
She added that the website would offer timely access to policies, recruitment processes, compliance requirements and official announcements, while improving engagement with citizens, ministries, departments, agencies and development partners.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, represented by Idris Wase, praised the initiative as a critical step toward strengthening accountability in public service.
“Digital platforms such as this will not only enhance oversight and compliance but also promote equitable access to opportunities, which lies at the heart of the Federal Character principle,” he said.
