Aregbesola Explains ADC’s Defeat in Anambra, FCT Elections

David Egbede, April 15, 2026

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has outlined reasons behind the party’s loss in the 2025 Anambra governorship election and the February 26 Area Council polls in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking at the party’s ongoing national convention, Aregbesola cited factors such as the advantage of incumbency, vote monetisation, and the misuse of state power by rival parties as major challenges faced by the ADC.

He also admitted that internal issues, including inadequate funding and poor organisational preparedness, significantly affected the party’s performance in both elections.

Despite the setbacks, Aregbesola expressed optimism, noting that the party has drawn lessons from the experience and is better positioned for upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.

In the FCT polls, the All Progressives Congress secured five out of six area council seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party won the remaining seat.
